4 Ways to Restore Your Curls After They Die

When it comes to my hair, I’ve always been free in experimenting with different cuts, colors, and styles. I’m pretty much fearless; I’ve cut my hair when people told me not to, I’ve colored my hair on my own whenever I felt like it (even though I have a sister who is a hair stylist). I’ve been fearless and, for the most part, it’s worked out well for me.

Right around the holidays I decided to color my hair using a brand from Walgreens. It was a decision made from pure boredom and things went completely wrong. My curl pattern changed drastically, and my hair became extremely dry and thin. The worst part was that this disaster happened hours before my friend’s baby shower.

After a few days in complete distress over my decision, my sister and friends gave me some helpful tips to get my curls back.
Step 1 – Accept What Is
I looked at myself in the mirror, cried, and reminded myself that its just hair, and it’ll grow back. Honestly, acceptance of my present situation helped me to become receptive to the helpful information that was given to me after. In the beginning, I was in denial and just wanted someone to magically make things better. The more I realized that the curls weren’t coming back on their own, the more frustrated I got.
Step 2 – Trim and Protein Treatment
I woke up the next day, after crying most of the night, and called my barber to schedule a cut ASAP. He took about an inch off, and then I ran to the nearest hair supply store for a protein treatment. My friend recommended the Two-Step Protein Treatment by ApHogee.
After washing my hair, I applied the treatment and sat under the dryer. When the treatment is dried into the hair, the hair becomes extremely hard, so do not comb hair. Once my air was dry, I rinsed the treatment out with warm water, and then applied a balancing moisturizer, left it in for a few minutes, then rinsed the moisturizer out.
I remember stepping out of the shower super nervous. I looked in the mirror and my curls were back. Not as defined or full as before, but they were back.
Step 3 – Leave-in-Conditioner
I applied Cantu Argan Oil Leave-in Conditioner,  like I usually do after each wash, to seal in moisture that I knew my hair was lacking. This stuff just works for me and my hair loves it.
Step 4 – Protective Style
I spent a few days rocking my hair in big braids under my head wrap until I was able to get some box braids. At this point I think my hair was probably more drained than I was. I rocked braids for about three months and when I took them out, the amount of recovery my hair experienced impressed me.

Honestly, I don’t think I’ll color my hair for a long time, especially not on my own. So if you see me, and you wonder what happened to that big, awesome, curly fro I once had, just remember that the summer’s near, and that afro is set to make a huge comeback.

Dressing These Curves

Hey, I’ve come to the realization that I’m not a size 4-6 anymore. These days I’m more focused on how I feel, than what the scale says. No truly (seriously?)! I know most woman say this but don’t really mean it. Honestly, weight has always been a touchy subject for me. Growing up I was always the skinny girl. I hated when people told me I was skinny, especially when I did my best to put on weight.

If you’re anything like me, finding the right dress can be challenging. Do like I did in these pictures, go find you a flattering wrap dress. They look great on curvy woman and on other body shapes. Like I tell my clients, don’t be afraid of color! Find a wrap dress that matches your eye color or skin tone. When it comes to accessorizing, less is more. If you rock big hair like me, or long straight hair, simple stud earrings and a nondescript medium size clutch will do.

I’m a true Cancer so I dress according to my mood. A little tip I use to put me in the best mood before heading out; do your hair and makeup first, then get dressed. If you need to get dressed first to avoid getting makeup on your clothes, cover yourself up with a robe, then ditch it for the final reveal. This way you look much better when stepping into your dress. You’ve concealed all those dark circles, acne scars, and your hair is lying just like you want it (or close to how you want it at least). You’ll have less to nag about and your significant other will thank you for being on time.

Tears of Joy

Call me crybaby Nat. I find myself crying tears of joy at least a few times a week. I started crying today watching my son run around in a park, picking tomatoes from a planter.

He’s so innocent and scrumptious I wish I could keep him this small. Moms, do you find yourself getting emotional as often as I do? What makes you emotional?

Patience

 

Ugh, who would have thought that I would be suffering from so much acne in my 30s. I know… yuck. Honestly, some days I don’t want to leave the house. Other days, I avoid looking in the mirror and having my picture taken.

After giving birth to my son, things seemed to get worse. I’ve gone to numerous dermatologists and they all say and do the same thing; push me to take medications that I don’t want to take. The acne is probably hormonal, and taking birth control pills might help me out, but I decided years ago that I wouldn’t take hormone altering birth control pills for personal and health reasons, so for now I gotta find other solutions.

So I decided to try and figure it out on my own; taking a more holistic and natural route. The first option I tried was an elimination diet, because honestly I am feeling that the acne is a result of something I’m eating that I’m allergic to that’s making me break out. So I’ve mostly cut out diary besides those nights when my husband teases me with delicious ice cream or chocolate (I can’t resist a bite).

The next option is to detoxify my body. After seeing a holistic doctor he suggested I do a kidney cleanse. I’m currently on my second tea detox routine for 12 days. The doctor makes nasty tasting teas made from herbs, roots, greens, etc… After the first 12 day routine I lost 7 lbs., felt super energetic, and my mind was less “foggy.” So, I decided to give the routine another go.

Next step is working out 2-3 days a week (that’s really all the time I have right now). I’ve been boxing for almost 3 years now, including throughout my entire pregnancy. I enjoy boxing and love how it makes me feel. Boxing really helped me avoid gaining too much weight during my pregnancy (I only gained 18 lbs).

Last step is water (I know some of you will say that this should be the first step). I’m working on drinking more water, which has always been a huge challenge for me. I just hate running to the bathroom every 5 minutes, especially when I’m out with my son. It can be quite challenging; I know you moms understand.
